Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She is well-known as a public speaking. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, commentary and analyses of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that explores the representations of females in popular culture narratives. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her main focus. However, Sarkeesian also explores the issue of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups who are left out. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identities and feminisms from at an early age, she created her website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while still a student at the university. She had a plan to launch an internet series that examined the gender roles in games but was the target of an online harassment campaign. This attack was not enough to halt her. In fact, it made her more committed to be a feminist as well as media critic. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit focused on the portrayal of women within pop cultural and the narratives that surround them.
